Chronic inflammation is a very serious problem affecting the health and
lifestyle of a great many people. It is implicated in many afflictions
such as Alzheimers, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. More obviously it is responsible for arthritis and sore joints. The number one cause of this is our daily diet which is heavy in sugar and refined carbohydrates. The genes which we inherited from our ancient ancestors are not equipped to handle a diet which is so high in sugars.
Normally inflammation is the bodies response to an injury. White blood cells are speedily sent to the injury to kill bacteria and repair the wound. However when the damage is inside the body, for instance in the blood vessels of the heart, invisible inflammation can result in chronic disease and it is becoming obvious that excess sugar in the diet promotes this inflammation. An excess of refined carbohydrates in the diet, including sugar, is very unhealthy and can lead to heart disease.
Large scale medical studies such as The Nurses Health Study have shown that people who eat very high amounts of refined carbohydrates double their risk of heart attack. The average American now consumes 160 pounds of sugar every year and this consumption is steadily increasing at a rate of 2% per annum. Sugar laden soft drinks are the single biggest source of sugar and many of us have a near addiction to these as well as to highly sweetened foods of all kinds.
What can be done to cut down on refined carbohydrates and the inflammation which they cause? The simplest way is to consume less processed foods, soft drinks. and in particular sugar and refined carbs. Eat more anti-inflammatory foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains and olive oil. Avoid anything which contains trans fats and corn syrup.
Maintain a healthy weight. You don,t have to diet to do this. Simply eat less refined carbs and more ant-inflammatory foods. Get some exercise to help keep you healthy. Walking is the best form of exercise for most people. A brisk 30 minute walk daily will work wonders for you. Learn to relax completely. Deep relaxation is a wonderful way to fight inflammation. Some people will find relaxation in deep breathing exercises, yoga, meditation or Tai chi. Go for whatever works best for you and just relax.
Finally get a good nights sleep. The body needs sleep to renew itself daily. Most people will benefit from eight hours of good sleep.
