Sweat

Night Sweat
By Steven Wayne

Night sweat - or sleep hyperhidrosis, as it is called by medical experts - can be a serious problem. First of all, it can be upsetting, but it can also take away your sleep, or be a warning sign of a disease that one might not yet be aware of.

First of all, it's important to realize that oftentimes the causes of sweating at night are quiet mundane: people for example simply put on too many blankets, or sleep in rooms that are too hot at night.

It's also normal to sweat a bit at night - but if you wake up and you find that your sheets are soaked, then that's a sign of night sweat.

Excessive sweating during the night is common among women in their menopause, and if that describes you, then it's best to simply get some sweat-friendly pyjamas and bedsheets and wait till it's over. It will take some time, but this will pass too.

Another common cause of sleep hyperhidrosis is medication. Many psychiatric drugs for example have night sweats are possible side effects, particularly antidepressants. Some studies suggest that up to 22% of the people who take antidepressants have to deal with night sweats.

Idiopathic hyperhidrosis is another common cause of night sweats - it simply means that the body produces too much sweat for no apparent reason whatsoever, and it also does so at night.

In rare cases, night sweats can be an early warning sign of cancer - particularly if there are other symptoms too, like fever and unexplained weight-loss.
